contemporary textile art

velerie huggins

Colour and pattern drive my passion for textiles, and the collection of materials over time is an essential process in the development of my ideas. In the tradition of patchwork and appliqué quilts, but in a contemporary style, I work mainly with commercially printed fabrics, finding excitement in placing often seemingly incongruous designs or images side by side to provoke an unexpected “dialogue” or to suggest a narrative. Digital printing and photo transfer have allowed me to expand my repertoire of pictures on fabric.

My work, though decorative, often has dark undercurrents, providing a sometimes unsettling contrast to the softness and prettiness of fabric and thread.
